Here's something that's fun to
play with. This site is an online demonstration of the VideoCraft
GIF Animator, a shareware program that allows you to create animated
text Gifs and banners. On this page, you can enter some text, select
from 18 different effects, then click on "make your
banner". Your banner will then be created. The down side is
that in this demonstration, you have no control over text size or
color, so your ability to create interesting banners are limited.

This site claims to have a
collection of 5000 animations. Whether that's true or not (I didn't
count them) there's a lot here and they're arranged in over 60
categories so that you can more easily zero in on the type of image
you're looking for. Although this site features tons of images, the
interface for viewing them is a bit clumsy as there are no contact
sheets, and you have to use drop down menus to first select the
category, then a specific image within that category. Once you've
selected the image, though, you're given the height and width of the
image, and you're given an opportunity to select different colored
backgrounds to see how the image will look on them, which is a very
nice feature.
